Letter Carrier: Eric in Portland Oregon

Eric, Letter Carrier

Uniforms Series

Job: Letter Carrier
Uniform: there are lots of choices, pants, shorts, shirts, sweaters, hats, belts, shoes

The United States Post Office has no official motto, but this is the inscription found on the New York City Post Office on 8th Avenue:

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of the night stays these couriers from their swift completion of their appointed rounds."

What do you like about the uniform?
The pockets are the perfect size for carrying letters.

What would you like to have changed about the uniform?
There are a lot of things.
- reflective elements could be incorporated for safety
- convertible pants for sudden weather changes
- utility belt to carry the scanner

Urban Weeds readers, if you have any information on who originally designed this uniform will you please leave a comment?

Eric is also a photographer, check out his work: Eric Wimberly

  4. This cracks me up. The post is a lot about utility- what could be changed to make his uniform better for his regular daily activities. And everyone is commenting on his good looks.
I'm guilty. I was also going to say I wish my mail carrier looked like this.

  5. What a great idea for a "street style" series! (Full disclosure, I'm perfectly happy with my current mail carrier. Even more disclosure, I'm male and straight.)

  12. What an awesome portrait, Lisa. I love how you ordered the photos, so that at first you wouldn't guess he's a postal carrier just by his face. His uniform ideas are so great! And I'm amazed that he's a photographer too!

  14. Mailman (person) style is so good. And what a nice job, right? And the bags. I looked a while back for mail-person supply stores (nope) because I want the belt with huge saddle-bags so bad. My mailman wears the shorts and pith helmet combo all winter. His calves are incredible. He is very busy and always has his headphones in, so he has no idea how much attention I give him. Not really crush-y attention, just pure admiration. Sigh. To think that one day it will all be digital, and no one will walk around all day in an awesome blue and white costume, bringing paper surprises to people's homes.

  17. I am a letter carrier. So I can shed some light on the question of who designed the uniforms.

There are multiple suppliers and manufacturers, but all must follow exact postal specifications.
In short, its the US Postal Service who designs the uniforms.

  18. Hi Joe, thanks so much for your comment! I appreciate it. I'm looking for who specifically designed it, or more information about the team that worked on it. Really, any information on the thought that was put into it. Who is in charge of the uniforms is there a whole department? Anyhow, I'm just curious about how things came about.

    Thanks again!
    Lisa

  19. I don't know anything more. There probably is a group in Washington DC at national headquarters that deals with the uniforms.
